SYNOPSIS

A man (Clovis Cornillac) awakens inside a cave. He has no idea who he is or why he was there.  However, as he makes a trek back to the surface, he begins to discover that some things are better left forgotten.

CRITIQUE

Eden Log is an extremely difficult movie to watch. The film follows a lone man who is suffering from amnesia as he attempts to figure out who he is and why he was lost inside a dark cavern.  Not only that, the man must also hide from the strange creatures and armed guards who seem to be hunting him.  To make matters even worse…the film barely has any dialogue. Our main character is alone for the majority of the film, and when he does finally run into a few other people, they have very little to say.  And for that I applaud director/co-writer Franck Vestiel.

While it frustrated me to no end, I found myself mesmerized by Eden Log.  It is a puzzle that I want to solve. But the film isn’t that simple, even when the film give you that “aha!” moment where everything is revealed, you are still left with questions.  And with the state of Science Fiction in film lately, Eden Log is a breath of fresh air. It’s a film that forces you to think.  And while I will agree that this is definitely not for everyone, this is defiantly a film for serious Science Fiction fans.

THE VIDEO

Eden Log is presented in 1080p at 1.85:1 widescreen and looks very good, with an extremely striking monochromatic palate.

THE AUDIO

The film is presented in both English and French (in two different versions) in 5.1 DTS-HD. The mix is outstanding with some amazing ambience work. The mix makes the film perfectly claustrophobic.

THE EXTRAS

The single extra, if you can call it that, is a French Language Version of Eden Log.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Eden Log is not a fun film. While I do think it takes patience and an open mind to want to sit through this film, it’s definitely a film you would want to discuss afterwards.

VERDICT: RENT IT
