SYNOPSIS

A strange premonition causes friends to abandon their day at the speedway, just before a crushing pileup hurtles cars into the bleachers with fiery consequences. They have cheated Death. But Death is only getting started.

THE VIDEO

The Final Destination is presented in 2.40:1/1080p using the VC-1 encode on a 50GB disc. Picture quality on New Line BD releases is generally very good, and this transfer is no exception. Colors are clean and vibrant, contrast is fine, detail is solid, and there are no noticeable flaws in the picture. Optional subtitles include English SDH and Spanish.

THE AUDIO

The English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track is pretty good, offering a fine surround sound experience. Dialogue is clear, the score is directed across the soundfield, and the sound effects are popping. Also featured is a Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1 dub track.

THE EXTRAS

Bonus material is presented in high definition video, stereo sound, and with a VC-1 encode.

Body Count: The Deaths of The Final Destination (HD, 22:07): There are seven featurettes here, each dedicated to deconstructing a specific death scene; prepping the set, filming, on-set interviews, etc. The following death scenes are presented: Explosion in the theater, Samantha engine block, cowboy racetrack, racist fire, Lori escalator, Hunt pool, and gearhead fence.

The Final Destination - Racecar Crash (HD, 5:00): View from three different perspectives; storyboards, pre-viz animatics, and visual effects. The third option is the most exciting as various VFX elements for the racecar crash scene are identified: the reel switches between the original shots, background plates, green screen shots, and effects added in post-production.

Mall Explosion (HD, 6:04): The same deal as above, the sequence available from three perspectives, the visual effects reel being the most fun to watch to see the various elements/shots combined to create the final shot.

9 Deleted Scenes (HD, 7:16): All of these were wisely cut from the film. The first three are death scenes from the racecar crash, the fourth an incredibly lame scene with the lead couple, the fifth showing the mechanic’s original death, the sixth being Hunt’s original death in the pool, the seventh a laughable scene of Janet attempting death by jaywalking (!), and the eighth and ninth two scenes at George’s house.

2 Alternate Endings (HD): First is the original ending (Nick jumps out of a window, the girls get impaled), the second finds Nick sucked in and killed by the escalator.

Sneak Peeks (HD, 1:59): Features an exclusive look at the new A Nightmare on Elm Street.

The disc is also BD-Live enabled (but no exclusive content as of this writing).

A second disc houses a Digital Copy of the film. You can use the disc to transfer the movie to your computer, or use it as a coaster.

FINAL THOUGHT

Low box office returns should be reason enough to put this tired franchise to death. Pun intended!

VERDICT: SKIP IT
