SYNOPSIS
More adventure of Agatha Christie’s Belgium detective Hercule Poirot (David Suchet), the first of which is delightful two-part “Peril at End House” where the answers are never quite what you expect them to be and the outcome isn’t certain until the last few moments.
CRITIQUE
Nine more episodes of Poirot, including the two part mystery mentioned above, highlight Series 2 of the enduring British program, all of them still anchored by the miraculous talents of the great David Suchet and featuring crackerjack writing and directing befitting an Agatha Christie adaptation. All of them are pretty great, only the rather flat “The Lost Mine” coming across as wee bit flat. Other than that, it’s hard not to get upset about anything going on here, and once again the makers of this series have done an overall outstanding job.
Favorite episodes this time include the gleefully twisty “The Disappearance of Mr. Davenheim” and the surprisingly sentimental “The Adventure of the Western Star,” both of which brought a mighty big smile to my face. But the best episode might just be the most obvious one, “The Kidnapped Prime Minister,” showcasing Suchet at his very best while also allowing his regular costars to shine brightly at the same time.
All-in-all, Series 2 is another fun collection of mysteries, and revisiting them again after so many years was a total joy I admittedly hadn’t anticipated.
