SYNOPSIS

University physicists Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Sheldon (Jim Parsons) know whether to use an integral or a differential to solve the area under a curve. But they don’t have a clue about girls. Or dating. Or clothes. Or parties. Or having fun. Or, basically, life. So when a pretty blonde named Penny (Kaley Cuoco) moves in the apartment across the hall, the guys decide to get an education outside of the classroom. Boys, you have a lot to learn.

CRITIQUE

Perhaps it is important to preface the next few paragraphs by telling readers that this writer is not a fan of sitcoms. Yes, it’s true. In fact, this writer hasn’t seen Seinfeld or Friends. One day, however, this writer will try to make history and watch all seasons of both shows. So it comes to this writer’s surprise that the first season of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory was actually pretty darn funny. Yes, that’s correct, it tickled this writer’s funny bone!

The show's concept seems simple, but the execution is not, it is well crafted and laugh-inducing. The Big Bang Theory relies heavily on its band of zany characters as well their personalities (Sheldon takes the prize for the smartest and most eccentric character on TV) and antics for the majority of the laughs. Put Leonard and Sheldon, and their two best friends Howard (Simon Helberg) and Rajnesh (Kunal Nayyar), into various socially awkward situations, and the jokes are endless. Then there’s Penny, who makes the boys swoon, except for Sheldon, who rarely shows any interest in her (a running gag).

Props go to the writers for coming up with fun stories and genius character moments, as well as incorporating cool scientific related ideas and lots and lots of physicist jargon, and getting it right. Certainly, The Big Bang Theory would be nothing without its cast. In fact, the casting is downright perfect. Johnny Galecki and Kaley Cuoco are great, but it’s Jim Parsons who is an absolute hoot! As the best friends, Simon Helberg and Kunal Nayyar add massive support to a cast of characters that’s bringing the laughs in spades!

THE VIDEO

Warner Bros. presents The Big Bang Theory in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen. Colors look pretty good, picture quality is accurate and detailed, and overall there are no major complaints about this presentation.

THE AUDIO

Warner Bros. presents The Big Bang Theory in English 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround. Dialogue and sound effects, as well as the music of the week, come through clearly via the front speakers.

THE EXTRAS

The single extra is Quantum Mechanics of The Big Bang Theory, a 17-minute featurette comprised of cast and crew interviews. The subject here is the show itself, the characters and the inspiration for some of the jokes. Not a great behind the scenes look, but a decent effort. A few commentaries and a set tour would have been nice to see here.

FINAL THOUGHTS

The Big Bang Theory comes highly recommended to anyone who likes sitcoms. Seriously, it’s that simple. But, this writer will also make the following bold claim: non-sitcom viewers will find something to like, and should take a chance and check out the show.

VERDICT: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
