SYNOPSIS

After ditching school one afternoon misfits Rickie (Fernandez) and JT (Segan) decide to explore an abandoned insane asylum. Inside they discover a woman (Jenny Spain) chained to a table, stripped naked, and hidden away as if left to die.  However, the boys discover that this woman is different, no matter what happens to her – she cannot die.

CRITIQUE

Deadgirl is not a film for most people.  And even if you aren’t immediately turned off by the film and what lurks within, it’s a hard film to say that you “love” and “enjoy.” Cuz there really isn’t anything to “love” about this film, and if you “enjoy” it then (I’m sorry) but you must be a seriously disturbed person.  This is a film filled to the brim with nihilism and sexual perversion, populated with characters that you really hope that you never meet in real life.  Now, all that being said, Deadgirl is not that bad of a film.  It’s one of those films that you find yourself compelled to watch and feel dirty about doing so.  You want to turn away, but at the same time you find yourself unable to move.

When JT and Rickie discover a beautiful woman, chained to a table and hidden away in an abandoned asylum, their thoughts go into two different places. Rickie wants to go to the police and save the girl, JT sees an opportunity that he knows he cannot pass up, and after giving Rickie a bit of a thrashing, JT sets his sights on the woman.  She is the perfect plaything for him; she is everything that he cannot have out in the real world.  However, as time passes, the Deadgirl begins to decay and the abuse that JT has given her begins to show. And JT, with the assistance of his friend Wheeler (Eric Podnar,) realizes that he needs to make another playmate before the one he has is all used up.  Rickie, on the other hand, tries to reason with his friends and, ultimately, attempt to free the Deadgirl.

While the film does have its share of dark humor and revolting imagery, Deadgirl is really a cynical look at the coming of age story. In this case, what happens when two friends end up having their relationship torn apart because a woman has entered their lives. Now, this is of course, overshadowed by the fact that the woman is a zombie sex slave that one of the boys is keeping as a pet, while the other wants to get rid of her and hopefully have things return to normal.  This is not a film I can recommend; however, I believe that those who are willing to take a ride on the dark side will find this film to be an interesting take on the zombie genre.

THE VIDEO

The film is presented in 2.35:1 and looks pretty good. There are no flaws in the image at any point in the film.

THE AUDIO

Deadgirl is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround and has a good mix. While there is nothing in the film that taxes your system, the mix is still quite good.

THE EXTRAS

None.

Although I do believe that the Unrated Cut DVD edition comes with commentary and other extra features.

FINAL THOUGHT

If you see only one film about zombie necrophilia this year, make sure it’s this one!  I recommend it, but only for those who think they can take it.

VERDICT: RECOMMENDED
