SYNOPSIS
They planned a Vegas bachelor party that they would never forger. Now they really need to remember what exactly went down! A baby? A tiger? Why is one of them missing a tooth? And most of all, where is the groom?! What the guys did while partying can’t compare to what they must do sober in an outrageous caper that has them piecing together all their bad decision from the night before – one hazy clue at a time. Director Todd Phillips (Old School) and an all-aces comedy cast tie one… big time!
CRITIQUE
This version is advertised as a 2-disc special edition but that is title is a bit deceiving. Disc One is the Unrated Version while disc 2 is the theatrical version with the special features. The studio could have easily but both versions on a dual layered disc and put more special features on disc 2 such as deleted scenes or a making of featurette. The Hangover was probably the surprise blockbuster hit of 2009 grossing over $450 million worldwide. This is even more impressive considering it is an R-rated comedy, and it became the number 1 grossing R-rated comedy of all time.
There are some unbelievable moments, such as them stealing a tiger, and sneaking it into the hotel room, and Doug being stuck on the roof (security, or maintenance would have discovered him). Ken Jeong’s character is a little too over the top and attention-seeking. The credits sequence with the slideshow is pretty entertaining and Mike Tyson was a funny surprise even though he can’t act to save his life. Alan (Zach Galifianakis) is probably the funniest character in the film. Bradley Cooper (Alan) is probably the most overrated actor in Hollywood today and should not be a lead in any film.
THE VIDEO
The Hangover is presented in a crisp anamorphic widescreen transfer.
THE AUDIO
The Hangover is presented in a solid English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround track.
THE EXTRAS
A disappointing lineup of features for a movie that grossed over $200 million at the box office.
Hilarious Gag Reel: Fun on the set.
The Dan Band Performs Fame: They were funny in the movie, not so much for this song.
Ken Jeong’s Non-stop Hilarious Improv: He’s an overrated, typical Asian comedian doing his shtick.
The only reason for the 2-disc edition moniker here is the inclusion of a Digital Copy of the movie in standard definition (the offer expires at the end of 2010).
FINAL THOUGHTS
The movie was a nice surprise, but the extras on the DVD are not.
