SYNOPSIS

Six Chicago “best friends, 3 guys and 3 gals, try to maintain their close relationship after one of the ladies (Elisha Cuthbert) leaves one of the guys (Zachary Knighton) standing at the altar and runs off with another man, The Graduate-style.

A week later, she’s back, ready to admit her mistake, but can things ever be the same again?

CRITIQUE

In all fairness, I must admit that, with very few exceptions (e.g. Entourage), I am not a fan of television sitcoms.  Most of them are just too silly for my personal taste.  Writers of these show tend to give us sketchy characters and go for that next punch line, rather than letting the humor emanate from “real” people and situations.

I guess that my primary problem with Happy Endings is that I have trouble accepting the show’s basic premise.

The Elisha Cuthbert character totally humiliated the Zachary Knighton character in public when she fled their wedding.

How can he ever forgive her for that, and how can their friends, including Elisha’s sister and brother-in-law (Eliza Coupe, Damon Wayans Jr.) not take sides?

It’s a situation that, despite how hard the writers try, doesn’t seem real.

The actors, which include Adam Pally and Casey Wilson, are all very talented people, but in this show, they are being a bit too “cute”.  Perhaps it’s the scripts and the direction.  I don’t know.

What I do know is that this series, despite the fact that it has received great reviews elsewhere and has been picked up for a second season, doesn’t work for me.

The 2-disc set contains 13 half-hour episodes.

THE VIDEO

The anamorphic widescreen picture is broadcast sharp.  There are no noticeable flaws.

THE AUDIO

The Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound is excellent.

THE EXTRAS

Style Previews are a pair of 2-3 minute featurettes in which the show’s costumer discusses how she clothed the cast.

Mark Douglas Parody Theme Song of the series.

Mark Douglas Interviews actors Adam Pally and Casey Wilson.

Mike Relm Remix Music Video is exactly that.

Deleted Scenes from select episodes.

Outtakes round out the bonus material.

FINAL THOUGHT

Other viewers might very well enjoy this show and find it very funny, but it is not my cup of tea.

VERDICT: RENT IT
