Synopsis

Accused of fabricating a defense, Jack Roper (John Hannah) throws his life and the lives of his colleagues into turmoil after his single-minded pursuit of the truth puts his career in jeopardy.

Critique

The second season of New Street Law picks up where the first one left off.  Jack decides to defend himself against a charge of “attempting to pervert the course of justice,” while the rest of the New Street gang has to figure a way to defend Jack and carry on with business as usual, which is as scarce as ever.

Jack is recognized in public, and not in any way he’d like to be.  He gets death threats, and it is not until his nemesis comes to his defense that things start to go his way.

But the season isn’t all about Jack.  That’s actually a very small part of it.  The team works some great cases and there is plenty of drama amongst the group.

By this time, the DVD’s have been released and the show is off the air, cancelled for one reason or another, a fact that makes season two feel like something of a hard sell.  That this was the show’s final curtain is something of a shame because New Street Law is a pretty good show.  The courtroom scenes are compelling, the writing is sharp, and the cast is excellent.  This is a show that calls to mind all of the recent, popular courtroom dramas, shows like The Practice.  Jack and his crew are always the underdogs, and it’s hard not to root for them.

The show has come and gone, but it’s worth a look if you’re in the market.

Video

New Street Law is presented in a 1.77:1 aspect ratio.  The picture is sharp, and the straightforward, naturalistic photography translates well to DVD.  The color levels are sharp, and the black and white levels are solid.

Audio

This disc is presented in Dolby Digital sound, and the presentation is sharp.  The soundtrack is not overly taxing, but the presentation is even and well balanced.

Special Features

Nothing.

Final Thoughts

I highly recommend New Street Law … as a rental.  The lack of bonus material and barebones presentation makes it difficult to recommend buying this to anyone other than die hard fans.  The show is excellent, and it’s always the right time to discover it.

VERDICT: RENT IT
