CRITIQUE
Night Court ran for nine seasons and established itself as a classic comedy series. Warner Bros. released the first season on DVD just about four years ago, and fans have been waiting (im)patiently ever since for season 2. The good news is that it's finally here, all 22 episodes, 525 minutes in all. The bad news: the waiting has begun for season 3.
This writer was introduced to Night Court on DVD, not having seen the show during its run on TV. I've heard people call it a "classic" and describe it using the word "hilarious". And they're right. The writing is consistently funny and it's the characters (and actors) that make it work so well. Among the funniest aspects are the one-liners, which are consistently hilarious, and sometimes even out-there. Oh, now this writer uses the word "hilarious" to describe the show, but that's what Night Court does: it makes you laugh, guilty as charged!
The second season is very good overall, with the majority being quality episodes. To name a few, in Billie and the Cat, public defender Billie Young goes to jail because she won't reveal a secret concerning her client. Pick a Number finds Harry in charge of selecting the person who shall receive the prize money of a winning lottery ticket. Among the season's funniest is The Blizzard, where a snow storm traps everyone in the court room and Dan is stuck in the elevator with an admirer. Nuts About Harry sees mental hospital patients trying to convince Harry and the court they are being mistreated. In the season finale Walk, Don't Wheel, Harry refuses to go to the prom with a disabled law student, which causes some problems in the court room.
Warner Bros. presents all 22 episodes of Night Court's second season on 3 discs.
THE VIDEO
Night Court is presented in its original broadcast 1.33:1 standard full frame. Picture quality is decent, considering the second season premiered 25 years ago on network TV. There are instances of softness in the image and colors are fair.
THE AUDIO
Night Court is presented in English Dolby Digital Mono. This is just okay, as the source material is pretty old. Dialogue is clear. There are English and Spanish subtitles available for all 22 episodes.
THE EXTRAS
No bonus material is included. Guilty!
FINAL THOUGHTS
Night Court is pretty funny and a solid sitcom. The release of this second season DVD set should be particularly exciting for fans. Let's hope it doesn't take a "court order" to get the studio to release the third season!
