Funny Jackass 3D a Sick Experience

So, I’ve never seen Jackass. Not the former show when it aired on MTV, not either of the two movies, the first made 2002 and the second in 2006. I’d heard about it, seen clips from it, but as far as having any sort of intimate experience with Johnny Knoxville and his crazy band of cronies that was one experience I’d just never allowed myself to have, something about the nature of it all screaming as being of the type I just wouldn’t enjoy.

I was partly right in that assessment. There are certainly portions of Jackass 3D I absolutely could not stand. In fact, this is the first motion picture where I thought I was going to have to leave the movie theatre. Not because I hated it, but because it made me physically ill, a sequence right at the end so putrid and unbelievably nasty I had trouble eating (or looking at my bathroom, for that matter) for multiple days after.

But the movie also made me laugh. A lot. Out loud. On multiple occasions. Plenty of what Knoxville and company do to themselves played out like “America’s Funniest Videos” but on acid, and where they were smacking one another around with a gigantic mechanical hand or playing duck hunt with live targets I almost couldn’t help but be amused. This is a movie that in spite of my better instincts I more often than not enjoyed immensely, part of me even wondering why I’d been avoiding its earlier incarnations with such fervor.

Not that I totally understand why this has continued to be such a massive hit over the years. Some of what the boys do is in such horrid taste it’s virtually unspeakable. More than that, like a bad “Saturday Night Live” skit the stuff that doesn’t work hits the concrete with a massive thud, and for every bit I laughed at there were two or three others where my groans couldn’t help but be heard by those sitting next to me.

Still, for those into this sort of thing Jackass 3D more than gets the job done. More than that, even though it ended up making me physically ill there was still plenty about it that had me in absolute hysterics. While I’d never tell anyone to pay inflated 3D prices to see it in a theatre as a rental watched with a collection of like-minded friends there is definitely plenty of fun to be had. Not that most out there will listen, and like a kick to the groin or a “Rocky” to the face I foresee Knoxville and his gang are going to be coming back for more relatively soon.

Film Rating: êê1/2 (out of 4)
