Magnum P.I. - Season 2   (Universal, 4/12/05, NR)

Buckle up for more action-packed adventure with all 22 Second Season episodes of the Emmy Award-winning, smash-hit series, Magnum P.I. Tom Selleck is television's most charismatic detective, and he's back in his slick Ferrari cruising the streets of tropical Hawaii. Beautiful girls, hot cars, and of course Higgins, T.C. and Rick are all here in this sizzling set that's loaded with unforgettable guest stars, including Mimi Rogers, Vic Morrow, Dick Butkus, Vera Miles, Pat Morita, Tyne Daly and Jill St. John.

Magnum P.I. is a fun show for several reasons. The stories are quite good and they combine mystery, drama and comedy, but also action. This blend of genres and the good storylines make the second season recommended entertainment. However, the success of the show is also because of Tom Selleck and the supporting cast, who perform very well in their roles. Standout episodes are Memories Are Forever, in which Magnum sees the woman he married during the Vietnam War but believed was dead, The Jororo Kill, in which Magnum must stop an international assassin, and several others. Overall, this season is pretty good and it also features some interesting guest stars.

Universal presents Mangum P.I. in 1.33:1 fullscreen format. Picture quality and colors look pretty decent. The show's age reflects on the quality of the video, but the overall presentation is actually good-looking aside from some grain and specks here and there. The 2.0 audio presentation presents dialogue and sound that is clear and easy to understand. Front speakers present noise free audio. Optional subtitles include English, Spanish and French.

The only special features are two bonus episodes, "Diamonds 'N Dust" from The A-Team Season 2 and "Brother's Keeper" from Knight Rider Season 2.

VERDICT: RECOMMENDED

The A-Team - Season 2   (Universal, 4/12/05, NR)

Everyone's favorite soldiers of fortune return as Season Two of television's greatest adventure series, The A-Team, explodes onto DVD for the first time ever. Pile into that famous black van for another season of adrenaline-pumping adventure with Hannibal, Face, Murdock and B.A. as they fight for justice against dangerous criminals, while staying one step ahead of their archenemy, Colonel Decker. Featuring all 22 thrilling Second Season episodes. If you crave action, adventure and fun, no one else can help - you must rehire The A-Team.

It's been a long time since I've seen The A-Team on TV. I remember it was a fun show to watch. The characters were good and the action always entertaining. Now, revisiting the show, it becomes clear that despite the cool montages and action sequences the stories are only fair. Season 2 has its highlights of course and they're fun, but several stories are rather boring. This is especially the case when watching a lot of episodes in a row. Too much of the same doesn't go over too well. The acting by the main cast is pretty good, although some of the weekly guest stars take their characters over the top sometimes. Despite a few flaws here and there, The A-Team remains a good show, but mostly for nostalgic reasons.

Universal presents The A-Team in 1.33:1 fullscreen format.

The only special feature is a bonus episode from Knight Rider Season 2 called "Brother's Keeper" on disc 1.

Knight Rider - Season 2   (Universal, 4/12/05, NR)

Get ready for more explosive, edge-of-your-seat adventure in all 21 Second Season episodes of television’s hottest crime show, Knight Rider. Ride shotgun with mysterious crimefighter Michael Knight (David Hasselhoff) and the baddest car on four wheels, K.I.T.T., as they chase more elusive criminals in each action-packed episode. Available on DVD for the first time ever, the heart-pounding Second Season of Knight Rider packs in even more thrills and more high-speed chases. It’s full-throttle excitement with Michael Knight and K.I.T.T. in the action series that left all others in the dust.

The first season of Knight Rider took a bit to get into the groove of the Michael Knight character and his car K.I.T.T. but it eventually settled into a decent formula type show. The second season tells a few good stories in between some silly ones. Perhaps the biggest event of the season is Michael's face-off with Wilton Knight's evil son Garthe (also played by David Hassellhoff) and his 14-ton, 18-wheeled monster truck called "Goliath." The two-part season opener is fun to watch, and later in the season Garthe returns for a final battle with Michael in the aptly titled "Goliath Returns." Overall the show remains decent-sized fun, but mostly for nostalgic reasons like The A-Team.

Universal presents Knight Rider in 1.33:1 fullscreen format.

There are no special features included with this release. On one final note, Universal has changed some of the music in the show.
