Emmy Award
winner Kelsey Grammer is Frasier-the hilarious
psychiatrist first seen on TV's Cheers and subsequently
the star of this smash-hit comedy series. Making the move from
Boston to his former hometown of Seattle, a newly divorced Dr.
Frasier Crane (Grammer) finds himself on the radio airwaves as
the host of his own call-in advice show. When he's not dealing
with the problems of his troubled listeners, he's embroiled in
skirmishes at home involving Marty, his retired police detective
father; Daphne, his father's physical therapist; his younger
brother (and rival) Niles; and Eddie...his father's devious dog!

FRASIER appears in a full
framed aspect ration of 1.33:1. Paramount has done a fine job
with this video transfer. Sharpness was solid, displaying a
distinct and well-defined image at all times. I noticed no signs
of softness or fuzziness. Jagged edges created no concerns, but
I noticed some minor edge enhancement at times. As for print
flaws, some light grain and artifacts showed up on occasion, and
I also saw a few examples of speckles and grit. However, none of
these caused excessive problems during the presentation. Color
was absolutely vibrant and lively. Black levels were reasonably
deep and dense, shadow detail was fine. Overall FRASIER
presented a very nice transfer.
FRASIER is presented in a
Dolby Digital Stereo soundtrack. While the soundfield maintained
an emphasis on the forward channels, it broadened the spectrum
nicely and opened up during audience enthusiastic response.
Elements appeared appropriately placed and moved convincingly
across the domain. Surround activity didn’t seem heavy, but I
felt impressed with the ambiance given. Audio quality was
strong. Dialogue sounded natural and distinct, and I discerned
no issues related to edginess. Ultimately, the audio track
worked well for this digital stereo mix.
FRASIER made
history by becoming the first series, comedy or drama, to
achieve a record five consecutive Emmy wins for Outstanding
Comedy Series. With this achievement, the series stands ahead
CHEERS, the series from which FRASIER was spun-off.
Overall,
FRASIER has earned a total of 30 Emmys (more than any other
series in history), including three for Outstanding Lead Actor
in a Comedy Series (Grammer) and two for Outstanding Supporting
Actor in a Comedy Series (Pierce). It's also interesting to
point out that Kelsey Grammer has been playing the part of
FRASIER for over 17 years now, and the show has also served
several times for appearances from almost all characters from
CHEERS, excluding Kirstie Alley, who is thus far to guest on
FRASIER.
In entering
its ninth season, FRASIER earned a total of 21 Emmys, including
three for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series (Grammer)
and two for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series
(David Hyde Pierce). The series has gained the prestigious
People’s Choice Awards for Favorite Television Comedy and
Favorite New Television Comedy Series; a Humanitas Prize; Golden
Globes for Best Musical or Comedy Series and Best Actor, and the
TV Guide Award as Favorite Comedy Series, along with many other
great compliments.
Paramount
presents a very nice transfer on this DVD series. Fans of the
television comedy/drama will be thrilled. FRASIER is a
comedy/drama that is delightful, hilarious and sharp. Fans will
not be disappointed with this DVD presentation. FRASIER appears
with a nice video transfer, great audio track and terrific
extras. Highly recommended.
