SYNOPSIS

Like other teens in California, the lives of Stephen, Kristin, LC, Lo, Trey, Christina, Morgan and Talan are filled with sandy beaches, beautiful friends and love triangles. But unlike other teens, they had cameras following them around during their senior year in this groundbreaking TV show that looks nothing like the lives most of us know. From trips to Cabo and Catalina, to the Prom and Graduation Day, it may look like fantasyland, but they’re not acting: they really are this rich and beautiful. For them, life really is a day at the beach.

CRITIQUE

Many viewers have questioned the shows true integrity. Some feel the show is completely scripted, while it has been rumored that stars of the show admit it is only partially scripted (i.e. they are really friends and the situations are real, but they are sometimes told what to say and how to act). Some situations seemed too outrageous to be real- like all the stars asking dates to the prom in TV-romantic ways (like using big signs or clues) and Kristin’s car breaking down the same day she wants to go car shopping (this scene seemed scripted for drama and good TV). They may be rich spoiled kids, but for some reason are interesting to watch. It may be envy or curiosity, but the lives of good-looking young adults is appealing to many.

THE VIDEO

Paramount presents Laguna Beach in 4x3 letterboxed widescreen. This should've been an anamorphic transfer but MTV decided against it. The video quality looks good with some great colors.

THE AUDIO

Paramount presents Laguna Beach in English Dolby 2.0 Surround. Dialogue sounds mostly clear as there are a few distortions with the quality. The music is loud and clear.

THE EXTRAS

Over 45 minutes of deleted scenes: Nothing really noteworthy.

Cast Interviews: Seemingly genuine.

LC's House Tour: Her house is cool enough to be on MTV cribs.

Lo's Guide to Laguna Beach: She basically visits locations seen during the season.

Behind-the-Season One Finale with Kristin & Trey: Follows them at the MTV times square studio before their appearance.

Music Videos by artists featured on this DVD: Not really well know artists.

Season Two Sneak Preview: Not much different than the previews shown on MTV.

FINAL THOUGHTS

This may not be the REAL orange county but it is the orange county viewers want to see.

VERDICT: RECOMMENDED
