Sara M. Fetters' Film Review!
MAID IN MANHATTAN appears in
both an aspect ratio of approximately 2.35:1 and in a fullscreen
version on this single-sided, double-layered DVD; the widescreen
image has been enhanced for 16X9 televisions. The film looked
fabulous.
Sharpness without fail looked
positive. There were no issues related to jagged edges, but some
edge enhancement appeared during a few shots; a few speckles
also appeared but not enough to merit a major concern. The color
palette was natural and stunning. Black levels came across deep
and solid, while shadow detail looked fittingly deep but not
overly thick. Ultimately, MAID IN MANHATTAN presented an
attractive video transfer.
MAID IN MANHATTAN is
presented in a Dolby Digital 5.1 track. I felt the track
remained tilting toward the forward channels failing to display
much body. Effects & music showed decent stereo imaging as well
as accurateness, however the track didn’t do much to impress
otherwise. Bass response seemed ample but subdued. Taken as a
whole, the audio track for MAID IN MANHATTAN seemed acceptable
for the film, but it never development above that.
MAID IN MANHATTAN is just
another impractical fairy tale. It’s an undistinguished run of
the mill romantic comedy. However, Jennifer Lopez and Ralph
Fiennes make it more enjoyable than I anticipated.
The DVD provides excellent
picture with a subdued Dolby track, and don’t forget about the
pathetic package of extras. There is nothing unique here,
although for those of you who are an easy target for enjoyable
romantic comedies, MAID IN MANHATTAN comes highly recommended.
