OVERVIEW

Every once in a while a show comes along and surprises me. As a lover of all things animated I am ashamed to say that I had never seen Samurai Jack before. Full of action and vivid colors this is the type of programming that we need more of.

Samurai Jack is the story of a Samurai that is sent to the future so that an evil magical warlord named Aku can take over the world. The show is centered around Jacks’ mission to return to the past and stop Aku from taking over the world with his evil robots.

Absolutely creative, visually stunning and just plain fun, Samurai Jack is another fantastic show from Cartoon Network. Jack has many misadventures which are full of quirky characters with my favorite being the Scottish Hunter and his wife (her Xena-esque war chant had me crying it was so funny.)  There is a lot of cartoon violence but Jack only attacks robots with his sword.

This Emmy winning series (2004 Outstanding Animated Program) is recommended to fans and newcomers, as well as parents with young boys because parents will enjoy it as much as the kids.

Season 2 contains 13 episodes.

Disc 1: 7 episodes

Disc 2: 6 episodes and special features

THE VIDEO

Flawless picture. The colors are vibrant and sharp. All episodes are presented in full screen format. This is what DVD was made for.

THE AUDIO

Samurai Jack is presented in French, English and Spanish in Dolby Digital Stereo 2.0.

THE EXTRAS

I was a little disappointed by the DVD extras because they are very limited. I am sure that Warner Brothers did not want to waste too much money on a DVD for children, but in the future give us some deleted scenes!

Creator Genndy Tartakovsky has a Samurai Jack scrapbook.

The original episode pitch includes the storyboard artists going through my favorite episode scene by scene. A definite must see.

There is also a creator commentary on one episode.

FINAL THOUGHTS

If you are an animation fan go out and buy this DVD set. Samurai Jack is the pinnacle of modern television animation. Kudos to all of those involved. Parents and children will enjoy every episode together, so if you want great family programming Samurai Jack - Season 2 is for you. As for me, I’m running out the door to get Season 1 right now!

VERDICT: RECOMMENDED
