The 61st Annual Golden Globes
Predictions
By
Rachel Sexton
The Golden
Globe nominations announced Thursday, December 18 provided some
surprises and some things that were expected. Here are the
people and films that I think will walk away with a Golden Globe
on January 25. Let’s see then how accurate I am!
Best
Actor—Comedy
Jack
Black,
School of
Rock
Johnny
Depp, Pirates of the
Caribbean:
Curse of the Black Pearl
Bill
Murray, Lost in Translation
Jack
Nicholson, Something’s Gotta Give
Billy Bob
Thornton, Bad Santa
MY PICK:
Since Something’s Gotta Give was more Diane Keaton’s
film, Depp and Murray will be in the lead. I think Depp’s
amazing body of work up until now with almost zero recognition
will put him over the top.
Best
Actress—Comedy
Jamie Lee
Curtis, Freaky Friday
Scarlett
Johannson, Lost in Translation
Diane
Keaton, Something’s Gotta Give
Diane
Lane, Under the Tuscan Sun
Helen
Mirren, Calendar Girls
MY PICK:
Some great actresses here, but as I said, Something’s Gotta
Give is really Keaton’s showcase and she should win here.
Best
Actor—Drama
Russell
Crowe, Master and Commander: Far Side of the World
Tom
Cruise, The Last Samurai
Ben
Kingsley, House of Sand and Fog
Jude Law,
Cold Mountain
Sean Penn,
Mystic River
MY PICK:
Again, amazing actors in this category, but I think Kingsley
will come out on top. Crowe’s gotten a lot of awards lately and
Cruise is hurt by the lack of a nod for his picture. Penn is
also an awards darling, but Kingsley seems due.
Best
Actress—Drama
Cate
Blanchett, Veronica Guerin
Nicole
Kidman,
Cold
Mountain
Scarlett
Johansson, Girl With the
Pearl
Earring
Uma
Thurman, Kill Bill Volume One
Evan
Rachel Wood, Thirteen
MY PICK:
Since Kidman won last year and none of the others’ films are
nominated, Blanchett should get a well-deserved award finally
following amazing performance after amazing performance.
Guerin is one of her best.
Best Director
Sofia
Coppola, Lost in Translation
Clint
Eastwood,
Mystic
River
Peter
Jackson, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
Anthony
Minghella,
Cold
Mountain
Peter
Weir, Master and Commander: Far Side of the World
MY PICK:
As the final chance to honor the trilogy, voters will give it to
Jackson for his masterpiece The Lord of the Rings. And
well they should.
Best
Picture—Comedy
Bend it Like
Beckham
Big Fish
Finding Nemo
Lost in
Translation
Love Actually
MY PICK:
This is a group of entertaining films but I think the critical
darling Lost in Translation will be victorious. But don’t
count out animated clownfish!
Best
Picture—Drama
Cold
Mountain
Lord of the
Rings: Return of the King
Master and
Commander: Far Side of the World
Mystic
River
Seabiscuit
MY PICK:
Again, this is the last chance to reward the feat that is The
Lord of the Rings. Despite some exceptional competitors,
Return of the King will be golden.
