"An
Entertaining Distraction"
About
as fun as Rat Race, except not
as stupid natured. Director Barry Sonnenfeld creates a new
comedy that while isn't as fun as Get Shorty, does pack
in its share of big laughs and an overall enjoyable time at the
movies. The film has its many comparisons with Rat Race;
carrying an ensemble cast with a director who knows his line of
work (comedy; Sonnenfeld for 'Trouble,' Jerry Zucker for 'Rat
Race').
Big
Trouble works because of the cast's willingness to have fun
with their roles. Even the goofball robbers/thieves characters
played by Tom Sizemore and Johnny Knoxville are amusing to watch
just because they seem as though they're having a blast doing
this, even if it may be the stupidest roles they've ever done in
a movie.
The
plot of Big Trouble is kind of hard to explain. In the
end, it's about a bomb that gets dragged onto an airplane. In
between there's a lot of chaos between various groups of people,
and there are quite a few faces in this story. Big Trouble's
really about all the comic problems that results from each group
of people presented, which eventually ends up in all of them
brought together at the climax.
What
keeps the comedy from the level of Get Shorty in
enjoyment is that Big Trouble lacks a clever script.
Sure, the flick's a real fun ride but it's not much more than
that. The jokes are funny and some of the gags are hilarious,
but Shorty had some real witty points within the script along
with carrying actors who pulled off their jobs incredibly at the
same time as pulling fun Hollywood jabs.
While
everyone has their own tastes, I found that Jason Lee, Dennis
Farina and his partner and Stanley Tucci were the most fun to
watch the whole time. Lee, playing Puggy, a man who is always in
search for a bag of Fritos, was always a blast to watch at times
when it was even simply his facial expression doing the work.
Although, one person who I thought was terrific was the short
cameo by Andy Richter, who does a really good job at being Andy.
Simply his presence makes you already form a smile. Though his
new show does not look very amusing, his role is enjoyable.
Big
Trouble's kind of like a child's new toy. At first it's a
lot of fun and games but as time travels by the excitement calms
down. The film has a first half that I found hysterical and then
calmed down the second half, but in the end the movie was quite
an entertaining distraction. Go at your own risk, but I had a
blast.
