I
went into Glitter with no expectations. I knew Mariah
Carey was a singer trying to be an actress, but I
really
didn’t' know much about the movie other than it was about a
singer. The best thing that I can say about this movie is that
Mariah isn't the worst thing.
Let's
start with the story. It is about a racially mixed (I'm not
bringing up race; they do) girl named Billie Frank who lives
with her alcoholic mother. Their house burns down and the young
girl is sent off to a local orphanage where she meets her
soon-to-be best friends. I couldn't even tell you their names.
One
of whom is played by DaBrat, who gives the movies' best
performance and you can almost say that it’s a cameo because
she only speaks like three times. We fast-forward 10 years and
we find Billie (Mariah) and her two friends dancing is a club.
Here Billie and her friends find jobs as back-up singers for a
marginally talented disco diva. The next thing we know Billie
has met and fallen in love with the number one D.J. in the USA,
played by Max Beesely.
Then
Billie becomes a star. She wants more artistic freedom. There's
also the overprotective boyfriend, a tragedy, and finally the
end. I've simplified it, but not by much.
This
movie is horrible.
Mariah's
acting is bad at times. She is stiff in certain scenes and
merely okay in others. Given more times with coaches, she won't
be bad. There are a few scenes where she is smiling for no
reason. She must be thinking, "Damn, I'm really in a
movie." The script is an utter piece of crap. It is full of
clunker lines such as "Is she black? Is she white? She's
exotic." They really say that. How's this one? "I want
more breasts! More breasts!"
I
was sunk half way down my seat during that scene. Even though
the script was bad, Vondi Curtis Hall's direction or over
direction was worse. There were slow-mo scenes, jump-cut scenes,
and even high-speed scenes. The dissolves in-between scenes
consisted of glitter, stars, more slo-mo shots of a bridge sped
up and even more that I've chosen to forget. I saw "Gridlock'd"
which Hall also directed and that was great.
Go rent that instead of seeing Glitter.
If
you are a fan of Mariah's music it's barely here. If you are a
fan of Mariah's body, then there's more to see in her videos.
This movie may work for 10-year-old girls, but for anyone who
can drive -- skip it.
