The
Score has all the makings of a great movie. Although
it never seems to make it there, it is still quite entertaining.
The star power is very evident though, as screen legend Marlon
Brando joins veteran legend Robert De Niro and Edward Norton, in
a plot to pull off one last "score". Throw in Angela
Bassett, and the cast alone makes the movie worth seeing.
The film begins in predictable fashion. Nick (De Niro) has been
in the crime game for years, and wants to settle down with his
girlfriend, Diane (Bassett). Nick owns a jazz club in Montreal,
and figures that he can be a legitimate owner.
However,
his long time pal, Max (Brando) offers him one last job to rob
the Customs House, with the payoff being in the millions.
Although Nick is very reluctant, saying that it cannot be done,
Max is adamant, mentioning to Nick that he has a man on the
inside. That man is Jack (Norton), who has gotten a job as an
assistant janitor at the Customs House by pretending to be
mentally impaired.
The film begins to pick up the place as heist finally gets
underway. Edward Norton gives a solid performance as Jack, but
particularly as the mentally impaired Brian. (A couple of people
in the audience were saying, "Bye bye now".) Angela
Bassett shines in her limited screen time, as does Marlon
Brando. De Niro is De Niro.
Despite it's predictability, I enjoyed the film. Although I
didn't see the twists at the end coming. It's definitely been a
while since there's been a good heist movie. For De Niro and
Brando fans, however, this film is a must see.
